What's Emerging
in the Design World
Pull down beds
Wall beds are gaining popularity (for those of you over 35, they used to be--and still are-- called Murphy Beds, remember?). Murphy Beds create space in guest rooms that can be used for computers on rollers when they are not in use. Suddenly, your guest room doubles as a home office.
Automation and Security
More clients are interested in home automation and security. Adding timers to lights around the house gives your home an occupied look when you are away. We have recently installed complete security systems including video cameras wired right into a channel on your television. Other projects have included automatic door locks, drive way sensors, etc. We have even installed motorized draperies and shades. When they close, they activate lights and the security system. These systems are also easy to use ? even for the "technically challenged."
Computerizing!
Some of our clients now use the UD TEC CEBUS wiring network. What is this? Imagine, using simple voice prompts, a computerized system that feeds your dog, locks your doors, and turns on the heating while you are away. It can even fill your bathtub with water. The best part is the low cost. We have also installed CD cataloging systems that offer "touch screen" simplicity. Picture yourself being able to listen to your favorite piece of music without having to look through the hundreds of CDs you have collected through the years.
Smart devices that can talk to each other with new wiring systems and protocols that speak the same language are fast becoming a part of our homes. Automating your house with these new products will free up your time and give you peace of mind.
What Happened to Wallpaper?
Wallpaper seems to have taken a second seat to paint and "faux painting." Faux finishes create a sense of depth and perspective to flat surfaces. Textures can be created with sponge, string, a putty knife or any other interesting implement. Other techniques include marbling, graining, antiquing and glazing. These methods bring plain, neutral surfaces to life by creating light variations in color and texture. Waxing for a beautiful high gloss over new types of paints which have been created in the past few years.
The Kitchen
In the kitchen, white high gloss polyester finishes have be-come popular. They look sharp and are easy to maintain. Frameless European cabinets are also popular.however, traditional cabinets are still popular. English and country French with dramatic wood finishes are also strong. Cherry wood is a popular material today. + We frequently install air convection ovens with room for a 35 lbs. turkey. Also, the 36" super oven, electric pizza stone, and brick-oven baking are gaining in popularity.
Granite, tile, and Corian are still the big sellers for countertops - along with concrete, slate, european stones of all colors and kinds. Decos in top and backsplashes come in glass, metal etc etc. .. there is hardly an end to what is available and, of course, nothing accents a kitchen in the morning more perfectly than a skylight over an eating area or food preparation station. We've found that most people think skylights are expensive. Check them out - they have come down in price... and do much to lighten a room.
Slip Covers
Slip covers offer a very relaxed look. This is a continuation of the "minimally furnished" popular look. We believe design should have a classic look, simple and untiring, never outdated. Slip covers make a wonderful addition to any furnishing if fabricated properly.
The Bath
There are some truly wonderful shower accessories that are now available to home owners. For example, adjustable body hoses can be installed that use a post that can be raised or lowered. Or, how about jets in the shower to cover all body parts? We can even install an adjustable sink. Shower doors are being eliminated ,if possible, and a sheet of glass used to protect from water on floor - creates an easy way to enter shower and a nice clean look to the area.
